چکیده

Using measurements of the surface-ocean CO2 partial pressure (pCO2) and 14 different pCO2 mapping methods recently collated by the Surface Ocean pCO2 Mapping intercomparison (SOCOM) initiative, variations in regional and global sea–air CO2 fluxes are investigated. 5 Though the available mapping methods use widely different approaches, we find relatively consistent estimates of regional pCO2 seasonality, in line with previous estimates. In terms of interannual variability (IAV), all mapping methods estimate the largest variations to occur in the Eastern 10 equatorial Pacific. Despite considerable spread in the detailed variations, mapping methods that fit the data more closely also tend to agree more closely with each other in regional averages. Encouragingly, this includes mapping methods belonging to complementary types – taking variability 15 either directly from the pCO2 data or indirectly from driver data via regression. From a weighted ensemble average, we find an IAV amplitude of the global sea–air CO2 flux of 0.31PgCyr (standard deviation over 1992–2009), which is larger than simulated by biogeochemical process models. 20 On a decadal perspective, the global ocean CO2 uptake is estimated to have gradually increased since about 2000, with little decadal change prior to that. The weighted mean net global ocean CO2 sink estimated by the SOCOM ensemble is −1.75PgCyr (1992–2009), consistent within un25 certainties with estimates from ocean-interior carbon data or atmospheric oxygen trends.

Interactive comment on “Data-based estimates of the ocean carbon sink variability – first results of the Surface Ocean pCO2 Mapping intercomparison (SOCOM)” by C. Rödenbeck et al

The manuscript is generally well written, though sometimes the heavy use of footnotes and comments in brackets disrupts the flow and makes some details difficult to understand. Why not give up on footnotes and simply include them in the text (perhaps in brackets like this?). I don’t think that there is any reader who will not read the footnote thus jumping to the bottom of the page and than not...

Simulation and assimilation of global ocean pCO2 and air–sea CO2 fluxes using ship observations of surface ocean pCO2 in a simplified biogeochemical offline model

We used an offline tracer transport model, driven by reanalysis ocean currents and coupled to a simple biogeochemical model, to synthesize the surface ocean pCO2 and air–sea CO2 flux of the global ocean from 1996 to 2004, using a variational assimilation method. This oceanic CO2 flux analysis system was developed at the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), Japan, as part of a pr...

What does chlorophyll variability tell us about export and air-sea CO2 flux variability in the North Atlantic?

[1] The importance of biology to the ocean carbon sink is often quantified in terms of export, the removal of carbon from the ocean surface layer. Satellite images of sea surface chlorophyll indicate variability in biological production, but how these variations affect export and air-sea carbon fluxes is poorly understood. We investigate this in the North Atlantic using an ocean general circula...

Trends in the North Atlantic carbon sink: 1992–2006

[1] A biogeochemical general circulation model is used to assess the impact of climate variability from 1992 to 2006 on air-sea CO2 fluxes and ocean surface pCO2 in the North Atlantic and to understand trends in the North Atlantic carbon sink over this time period. The model indicates that the North Atlantic carbon sink increased from the mid-1990s to the mid-2000s. Consistent with observations...

ESTIMATING GLOBAL CARBON TRENDS USING IN-SITU pCO2 OBSERVATIONS

While nearly half of total CO2 emissions over the last 50 years remain in the atmosphere, this fraction is subject to large year-to-year variability due to erratic land and ocean sink rates (Le Quéré et al. 2009). In order to investigate the tendency for oceanic CO2 uptake around the globe, long-term trends must be determined from available historical data. Recent studies of the North Atlantic ...
